Thank you.

As most of us do at this time of year, I'm looking back over the past year before the new one hits.  It's been a wonderful whirlwind and I am so incredibly grateful to all of you, my clients, for this past year.  We laughed a lot, we spent such precious times together, and we all have some beautiful memories to show for all our work.

Thank you.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the best year ever.

One from each of your sessions.  Pshew.

Happy new year!!

With love,

Leslie

It's About Love. {Family Photography | Twin Cities, MN}

I have been out to South Fork Farm several times now to photograph various events and weekends for The Soul Sisterhood Retreat, and each time it's a wonderful and fun experience. This past weekend we did another mother-daughter portrait party.  I really love doing these.  This was my first time out at the farm when there was snow!  It was about 3 degrees below zero outside, too, so I decided to shoot indoors as much as possible and focus primarily on the connections between mothers and their daughters, and worry less about using the farmland outdoors.  After all, as it says on the Soul Sisterhood website, "It's about love."  So that's what I wanted to photograph most of all.  (Several of them, however, braved the frigid temps for a few minutes at a time for the sake of a magical snowy backdrop in their photos, too.  Hearty AND gorgeous ladies!)

As always, every pair, without exception, was lovely, kind, unique, special and beautiful, inside and out. And many thanks to the fantastic and fun staff for inviting me out to Lester Prairie and for making my afternoon so cozy and sweet.

Enjoy!

Now and Then. {Family Photography | Twin Cities, Minneapolis St. Paul, MN}

This family was so much fun.  Yeah, I say that every time, but it's true every time!  Now, here is one of the things that made this particular family fun.

When they booked their session a few months ago, one of the things they wanted to do was to re-create a family photo they had done in a studio when the daughters (now both in college) were toddlers. They sent me a copy of the photo and I was so, so excited to do this for them.  I love how their updated version turned out.  I also would like to know this lovely mother's secret for not aging at all in 17 or so years... she looks exactly the same!

Here are both versions:
We did some more studio images... and I fully expect to re-create THIS one in 17 years!
It wasn't too terribly cold out, so we headed outdoors and laughed some more out there:

Casually Elegant Headshots {Portrait Photography | Twin Cities, Minneapolis St. Paul, Minnesota}

I love taking headshots.  I know, it probably sounds like a strange thing for a family and child photographer to say, since headshots are often so simple and business-y, and they are a necessary, "get it out of the way" kind of thing for many people.  But I really do love headshot sessions and I approach them as something special - I love when a headshot goes beyond "business-y" and turns into something expressive and real.

When this client and I consulted on the phone, she mentioned that she wanted something "playfully elegant" and I think that description matches her perfectly.  The concept was right up my alley, too!  Our session was an absolute joy - kind of like a casual afternoon party.  We spent a long time chatting about pretty much everything under the sun, and we managed to squeeze in a few pictures as well.  ;)

Here is a sampling.  Enjoy!

Beautiful Fall Family at Home. {Family Photography | Minneapolis St. Paul, Twin Cities, MN}

As much as I love using my studio space and the surrounding area, it is so fun to use new, special locations like this family's beautiful new home and property.  Their little guy was such a doll, and his parents so sweet. He didn't think too much of my camera at first, and I don't blame him one bit!  It (ok, I) must have seemed so crazy and strange.  But it didn't take much for me to make friends with him and for him to make friends with the camera.  We had a nice time together and the clouds even parted , giving us some pretty light out in their field.

Enjoy!

Luke. {Senior Portrait Photography | Twin Cities, Minneapolis St. Paul, MN}

I got the best email about two months ago.  A wonderful mom was looking for a senior photographer for her son.  She'd been shopping for awhile - there are a lot of fabulous photographers in the Twin Cities, as we all know - but wanted something specific for her son, a violinist, and through the miracle of Google she finally found the photographer who's work she wanted.  When she clicked on the "about me" page, the person looking back at her turned out to be an old classmate, friend and music colleague from college!

Seriously, what are the odds?

You can imagine how excited I was to get that email.  It had been a long time since I'd seen this terrific lady, who I remember as a top-notch flutist and a funny, engaging and smart person.  Our senior year of college at St. Olaf, on choir tour, she and I performed a huge piece for soprano, flute and choir at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, among other places.  Such great memories we have together, and when that email came in, they came rushing back with so much joy attached.

I say all this not to toot my horn or anything, but to marvel at this wonderful world we live in and to celebrate the way that kindred spirits are brought together when we need each other.  How amazing.

Anyway... she has a son who is as equally amazing, funny, talented and engaging as she is (no surprise there) and what a riot it was to do his senior photos!  He brought his violin and his wicked sense of humor along.

We shot this session in and around my photography studio space in Burnsville, Minnesota and we had a great night for it.

Enjoy!

Singin' in the Rain. {Family Photography | Twin Cities, Minneapolis St. Paul, MN}

I have had the worst luck with weather this season.  But I've had the BEST luck with wonderful, beautiful, fun families this season!

Back in June, this family had scheduled their family portraits with me.  Several rainouts and reschedules later, it was now October.  We made our plans and came up with a vision I was SO excited about.  The date of their session came.  We met at my photography studio in Burnsville, Minnesota and had a quick consultation and started to head out the front door.

It started raining.

I suppressed a mild panic attack and stood there for a moment staring at the water falling from the sky.  I was willing to go for it but asking one's clients, who are dressed to the nines, to pose in the rain and cold is a but much, I know.  Then this lovely mother said brightly, "Let's just go out anyway."

So we did.  And it was fabulous.  I knew they would be.  It was cold and cloudy but they were as warm and delightful as people can be.  This little boy was so full of fun and sweetness I can honestly tell you that nobody in his company could possibly notice what kind of weather was happening.  In the end, a little rain didn't matter in the least.

Anyway - pictures.  They wanted a vintage feel, and when she described their first set of outfits we decided to do an urban setting - which ended up being necessary because it was a great way to keep them covered and out of the rain!
After a little singing in the rain we headed back to my studio and did the second half of the session in the field out back, which was filled with the most perfect colors.

Many, many thanks to this family for sticking it out, enduring the cold and for their wonderful vision for their session, not to mention the fun and great conversation!

Sweetness. {Family and headshot photographer | Twin Cities, Minneapolis St. Paul, MN}

The mother in this family is a very talented and busy photographer here in the Twin Cities.  I had the gigantic honor of doing both her headshot and family pictures for her for her website.  I love headshot sessions and family sessions, so doing both in one was really fun for me.  Not to mention the fact that her family is as beautiful, sweet and adorable as it gets!  I absolutely love what she chose for them to wear.

Believe it or not, just a few minutes before we stepped outside to do these family photos, it started raining!  We'd already been rained out once this fall, so this was not what we'd hoped for.  Luckily, we decided to wait it out and after a short rain, the sun came out and it was beautiful out back.  It's been the strangest fall that way!
